F. Harrison Dreves | Selected Portfolio of Work

As a student at Vanderbilt University, I am pursuing dual majors in the Communication of Science and Technology and Earth & Environmental Sciences.  I also work for Vanderbilt Student Communications, producing video news reports about campus events every other week for InsideVandy.com. This work has given me experience in the logistics of news-gathering, including identification and contact of interviewees, interview techniques, and deadline-driven editing.  On my own time, I have produced several videos of backpacking and rock-climbing trips in state and national parks in the region.

I have worked with video since my sophomore year in high school.  I co-founded the Franklin High School Film Club and served two and a half years as its president. Most of my early work was focused on twelve short, fictional films, produced entirely by small groups of students.  Over the course of my senior year, we also wrote and produced one feature-length film, Project Hero, with a larger cast and higher production values.  On most of these films I served as field producer/director, cinematographer, and principal editor.  I have also done some script development, and I enjoy writing.

I have experience with various digital video cameras, including both tape and hard-drive systems.  For my largest film, Project Hero, I worked with the Canon Vixia, which utilizes the new AVCHD format, and I have a solid understanding of HD shooting and editing principles.  I have also worked with entry-level professional cameras, such as the Canon XL2, and am familiar with most of its functions.

I've acquired basic audio capture skills, and am familiar with the principles and use of shotgun, boom, and wireless mics.  I can also shoot digital still photography as needed, and am somewhat familiar with the processes of storyboarding, shot-sheeting, and other production essentials.

In the area of post-production, I have several hundred hours' experience with Final Cut, and have practical experience with both SD and HD production workflows.  I also have a basic understanding of Flash and web video publishing, and have exported and posted .flv video to YouTube, Facebook, InsideVandy, and various other sites.

What Started It All

While in middle school, I began producing videos to enter the National History Day academic competition. In both of the years I entered, my video documentaries were judged as winners at the state level, which gave me the opportunity to compete in the National finals. Though I did not place at Nationals, I still learned a great deal about researching and assembling an historical documentary … but you be the judge: Here are links to the 2004 Documentary about Apple Computer and the 2005 Documentary about College Radio.
