Writing Samples

Having worked in various capacities, I have developed a number of writing styles.  Below are samples of my writing, on a variety of topics.  To view a pdf of the entire piece, click the provided link.

Press Release: CU-Boulder advertising students win seven awards at top international competition
A press release I wrote for distribution by CU-Boulder's media relations staff to local press.
"Thirteen students from the University of Colorado Boulder’s advertising program have won seven awards in a major international advertising contest, the most collected this year by any four-year university."

Spotlight: Leysia Palen

A profile of the Chair of CU's Department of Information Science I wrote for the College of Media, Communication and Information's new website.
"She used both social and computer science training to understand how pilots in commercial airliners analyzed and shared critical safety information during flight. 'I came to appreciate that people make sense of the world in creative and adaptable ways,' she says."

Building a better computer out of diamond

Bill Howley Profile: Making Electricity Local
A profile of an advocate of distributed power generation I wrote for the publication Appalachian Voices.
"In 1974, a trip to West Virginia changed the course of Bill Howley’s life. The recent Yale graduate was immediately entranced by the taste of blackberries, the view of receding ridgelines and the smell of Appalachia in June."

The Materials Game
An interactive matching game pairing materials science discoveries with the products they enabled. I wrote the copy for this game and oversaw its development by an outside vendor.
"The information in computer hard drives is stored in memory bits, like tiny compass needles that can be switched between pointing north and pointing south. To increase the speed and data capacity of computer memory, computer engineers seek to make the bits smaller and more tightly packed."

Hunting for alien worlds
A feature-length article on recent discoveries of alien planets, especially in the Vanderbilt astronomy department, which I wrote for InsideVandy.com's science section.
"Whether scrutinizing a few distant stars for the tiny dimming of an earth-like planet, observing the atmosphere of a gas giant orbiting a nearby star, or hunting for hot Jupiters across large sections of the night sky, exoplanet hunters are redefining our view of the Universe. 'Itʼs one of those sexy science things,' explains Rudi Kuhn, of the KELT-South team. 'We might not be alone in Universe, after all, and I think thatʼs the big driver of these programs.'"
